This article can also be applied to the idea of ethnocentrism, prejudice that assumes the superiority of one’s own culture or ethnic group. Residents of Lewiston treated the Somalis as inferior to themselves. If there was a great influx of whites moving into Lewiston, I highly doubt that there would be such a big deal being made about the newcomers. I am writing about the film we watched in class titled, “Going to Chicago.” This movie clearly depicts the ongoing battle our nation has with multiculturalism. The movie examines the social and cultural history of Chicago’s black urban community. By focusing on the early to mid twentieth century, “Going to Chicago” highlights a period of cultural contact and transformation marked by The Great Migration, Industrialization and a commercialization of culture in urban centers.
