...ragedy. Hecate and the witches are the most important characters. Shakespeare used the witches as a way of dictating every action that occurred. Macbeth believes them and does what they say because their apparitions and predictions provide him with a false sense of security. However, their apparitions and future telling abilities also provide foreshadowing, and irony because of the sense of security they bestow upon him. The witches are the true narrators of the story. The foreshadowing also includes irony because of the subtle ways in which they provide it which end up making Macbeth misunderstand, and leading to his death instead of invincibility. They’re apparitions are ultimately correct, however Macbeth perceives them in the wrong way, which is a very clever display of irony by Shakespeare. The witches really have control of everything, especially Macbeth’s destiny. Everything that happens in The Tragedy of Macbeth is a result of their little game.
