He is the flower, not visually hostile, or wrong, but underneath all this is the serpent, the want to kill Duncan. In Act II, Macbeth is beginning to become overwhelmed by the though of him having killed Duncan. He sees a dagger and says “I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible to feeling as to sight? Or art thou but a dagger of the mind, a false creation.” This can be seen as derived from the “light is dark and dark is light” motif. This is the beginning of Macbeth’s turn to evil, so light to dark is more apparent here then before or later due to the intertwining of good and bad thoughts. Lady Macbeth again makes a gesture to this motif when speaking to Macbeth after Duncan’s murder by saying “My hands are of your color: but I shame to wear a heart so white.” Macbeth is still considered to be a great person.
