A butcher is a person who causes cruel or needless death so this description is true because even though Macbeth was possessed with evil, he still had the choice to wait and see if the prophecies would come true without getting into any trouble. He was selfish and killed Duncan to gain power thanks to the witches’ prophecies. They had told him that he was to become king; “All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter”. (Act 1 scene 3 line 50) Macbeth considers what will happen if this prediction should come true. Macbeth then makes up his mind and decides to kill the king with some encouragement from his wife. He was brave and intelligent before he heard the prophecies and before the murder he had hallucinated and had imagined a dagger leading him to Duncan’s room. He was slowly starting to lose his sanity. Lady Macbeth framed the king’s guards by spiking their drinks and then smothering them with Duncan’s blood and placing the daggers on them. In the morning Macbeth killed the two guards to cover his tracks and to make it seem as though he was concerned that it was they who committed the murder. Banquo suspected Macbeth of the killing as he was with him upon the heath and had heard the prophecies given to Macbeth by the witches. Macbeth then decided to kill Banquo, his best friend for fear that he might betray him. He had now become cold and callous because of his own selfishness and also because the witches had filled his head with evil thoughts. Malcolm would think Macbeth to be a butcher because he had told a group of murderers that Macduff was a traitor and therefore they massacred Macduff’s family. Malcolm would be correct in his statement but would not have considered Macbeth being influenced by the supernatural. The old Macbeth would never have murdered so many innocent people.
