The speaker tells his love not to be saddened by his departure when he flies off "to war and arms."(4) The new love he is chasing is not another lover but "a horse, a shield, a sword."(8) Lovelace goes on about his new mistress to Lucasta. He first mentions his new mistress in the second stanza. He makes it clear that he is chasing "The first foe in the field."(6) In Lovelace's third and final stanza he tries to prove his love to Lucasta. He tells her by leaving, it proves his love is true.
