... the same time sad days. Sad, because, even though I have so many brothers and sisters, I hardly knew some of them, due to the age difference between us. The good thing about it was, when some of the family members came back home to Puerto Rico to visit. They will mail a letter to say they were coming, but by the time the letter got to us they were already at home. I remember how much happiness will be in my parent’s faces, to see a taxi stopping in front of the house, and to see this people that we hardly knew or only saw in pictures, come home and be able to see and talk to them. Los Embarcados only came home in special occasions; Mother’s day, Father’s day, during Christmas or when there was tragedy in the family i.e., the loss of a love one. Even under that circumstance it was good to see them, and listen to the great stories they had to tell; stories about life in the Big Apple, N.Y. or Philly. Exciting, we did not have too much happening at home, specially growing up in a small Puerto Rican town.
