In chapter one of Lord of the Flies Ralph, Jack, and Simon encounter a baby pig, but do not kill it. "The three boys rushed forward and Jack drew his knife again with a flourish. He raised his arm in the air. There came a pause, a hiatus, the pig continued to scream and the creepers to jerk, and the blade continued to flash at the end of a boney arm. The pause was only long enough for them to realize what an enormity the downward stroke would be." (31) This example remains with the Survivor contestants. If the crate of chickens had been awarded to them their first day on the island, the chickens would not have been killed then. Hunger drives people to savagery. Despite their age differences the contestants of Survivor and the boys in Lord of the Flies behave in similar ways when first arriving on their islands. When they first arrived at their campsite in episode one, the members of the Sook Jai tribe wasted their time and strength building an unnecessary shelter. They began the shelter without taking the time to plan it or think about what other things needed to be done. Because of their lack of precautions the tribe soon became hungry, thirsty, tired, and irritable. In Lord of the Flies the boys decide to light a signal fire without considering how they would control it. "Beneath the dark canopy of leaves and smoke the fire laid hold on the forest and began to gnaw. Acres of black and yellow smoke rolled steadily toward the sea. At the sight of the flames and the irresistible coarse of the fire, the boys broke into shrill, excited cheering." (44) The irrational actions of the boys resulted in the death of a littlun. "'That little'un-' gasped Piggy-'him with the mark on his face, I don't see him. Where is he now?' The crowd was as silent as death. 'Him that talked about the snakes.
