He knew how to work the conch and because of his physical disease of asthma he taught Ralph how to do it. Piggy acts like a parent in some ways attempting to look after misbehaved boys. But he is not treated with the respect that is given to Ralph and Jack. People don’t even think twice about doing something inconsiderate to Piggy. For example Jack takes Piggy’s glasses and throws them far away from him and he breaks one of the lenses. Piggy is very dependant on his glasses because he would be technically speaking blind if he did not have them. Piggy is an outcast to most of the boys but Ralph. Piggy mentioned to Ralph that if he wasn’t there he wouldn’t be there either because he is the only thing keeping Jack from coming and killing him. So he always encourages Ralph to stand up against Jack because if he doesn’t no one will. Simon is like Piggy in some ways too. Simon is very quite and keeps to himself most of the time and like Piggy is an outcast. Jack thinks of Simon as a queer and Ralph calls Simon batty sometimes but has compassion towards Simon and is friends with him. Simon faints a lot and passes out and so this is annoying to many people. Simon likes solitude a lot and is very quiet. He has his own special place in the forest where he likes to go to be alone. He goes there quite often. Simon is very shy like Piggy also and he has trouble speaking in front of the group. When he tries to take hold of the conch he is often denied it because he has trouble speaking. He is often made fun of because of this.
