Although “The Celebrated Jumping Frog” lacks natural description, it doesn’t lack the over all setting. Because his characters are so well defined in the western manner, the story shows setting almost strictly through the characters. The setting is mostly realized through the main character Jim Smiley. The narrator also helps draw the picture with his speech. Through Jim Smiley and the narrator the setting of “The Celebrated Jumping Frog” is shown. Jim’s actions and attitudes and the narrator’s speech show the western setting of “The Celebrated Jumping Frog”. Also, when Smiley found out that the man had cheated him “he set the frog down and took out after that feller…” (5), shows that there is no law in the west and he had to take it upon himself to get justice. His attitude also helped develop the setting. Through his enthusiasm the westerners are present because most westerners were enthusiastic about finding gold. Such as when Smiley wants to make a bet on who’s frog can jump the furthest Smiley “went to the swamp and slopped around in the mud for a long time…” (Twain 5) just to find a frog for his opponent shows how the westerners got down and dirty to try to make their fortune. Also, the speech of the narrator is in western dialect. This is shown when the narrator says, “… so the feller took the box…” (5). Through Smiley’s actions and attitude the setting is very evident. Also, the narrator’s speech set the stage of the story. Another factor in the development of the setting in “The Celebrated Jumping Frog” is the theme. The reoccurring theme is luck as Twain said, “…he was lucky, uncommonly lucky” (2). This sense of luck showed the setting in the aspect that most of the people in the west were there to find gold.
