...up in Poland there isn’t much left there for him back home without his parents. When Jakob lives with Athos, they start to learn different things from each other. Jakob learned his Greek and English while Athos learned Jakob’s Polish and a bit of his Yiddish. “We took new words into our mouths like foreign foods; suspicious, acquired tastes.” page 21. Athos made Jakob review his Hebrew alphabet everyday. Athos said “It’s in your future in remembering” (page 21) showing his interest in Jakob’s learning, he is treating him like a son. While he was living with Athos he was learning geology, geography, and poetry. If Athos wanted to, he could have just provided a roof to live under, and food for Jakob but he does a lot more. Athos would read various types of books to Jakob such as books on insects, Greek independence, and poetry. He read these books in various languages to him. Athos is a very wise man and has a lot of knowledge to teach Jakob. Even though Jakob has moved to Greece, and with Athos being his guardian, he still thinks about his parents. “I watched Athos reading at his desk in the evenings and saw my mother sewing at the table, my father looking through the daily paper, Bella studying her music” page 19. On page 24 to 25 he has a dream about his parents and Bella. He misses his parents dearly and misses their presence. It’s really hard for someone to lose their parents especially when they were killed right in front of them. The memory of the death of his parents will haunt him for life. Hopefully Athos will fill most of what Jakob’s parents did. When Athos raises him, Jakob will be a different child from what his biological parents raised him to be because he is still young and has lots to learn. With Athos being a...
