This shows that Laurie is a very lonely boy who doesn’t have anyone to talk to. Marmee and the other girls sending custard over shows the hospitality. Laurie not having a mother signifies that fact that he needs a girl/women in his life to sort of guide him. Jo was amazed at all the things he had in his house which shows that she never really had much. Everyone but Beth would go over to the “mansion” to do all sorts of things. Beth was very shy and afraid of Mr. Laurence. Beth than began to sneak into the drawing room to play the piano. This shows that she was nervous about playing I front of people she’s not used to. Mr. Laurence buying Beth her own piano showed that he is very thankful for the girls, and what they have done for both him and his grandson. Beth was no longer afraid of Mr. Laurence or going into his house. Jo not wanting Amy to go to the theatre with her and Meg shows that Jo doesn’t like to “hang out” with her younger siblings. Amy threatening Jo foreshadows that she’s going to do something that will enrage Jo. The next day Jo realized that her writing book was gone and Amy had burned it. Jo was so angry that she vowed never to speak to Amy again. This shows that Jo’s book is her prized possession and it means very much to her. In the end everyone makes up which shows that Jo cares very much and knows she was in the wrong. Meg wishing she had the things that her friend Annie had shows that she longs to be rich and fashionable. She envies these girls. The girls treating Meg with respect after Laurie sends her flowers shows that the girls like Laurie and think that Meg must not be that bad if he likes her. Meg flirting and laughing at the party shows that she is enjoying being fashionable. She wants to be like the other girls. Laurie telling her that he doesn’t like her new look proves that he likes her for who she is not what she wears. Also, that he likes her personality better than her “new” one. The men talking about make her think about the way she was dressed and acting. She realizes that she is who she is and doesn’t need to be rich. The people gossiping about Mrs. March shows that they don’t realize how nice and what good people the March’s are. The mother saying she wants them to marry for love shows that she doesn’t care about riches and wants her daughters to feel the same. Laurie, wanting to promote friendly relations between households, shows that he is a very friendly person and wishes for everyone else to be friends also. Laurie inviting the girls to the picnic shows that he wants to show people what the March’s are like and to have them be more respected. Jo wearing the hat shows that she is very confident and doesn’t care what other people think about her. She wants to show that she is an individual. Meg wondering about Laurie’s tutor foreshadows that something may happen between them. Kate reply to Meg shows that Kate thinks everyone should go to school and she doesn’t think a governess is a good job. Mr. Brooke tries talking to Meg to show that he is similar to her. Laurie’s dream shows that he has no want to be extremely rich and that he is a very curious person. Meg dream once again show that she longs very much to be rich. Jo’s dream shows that she cares about writing and being in love. Beth’s shows that she doesn’t care about riches and just wants to be happy. Amy’s dream shows that she is very creative and would like to see different things.
