Another time, Holden became very upset when he saw the words “Fuck You” written on the walls of Phoebe’s school. He thought that when the children learned the meaning of those words, once again there would be a loss of innocence. When he and Phoebe did spend some time together, he wanted her to go on the carousel. She objected because she thought she was too big for it. When she did end up on the carousel, Holden was happy because it helped him feel that she could remain as a child.
