Continuing with the theme of structure, we can also see that the way he has laid out the poem emulates the uncertainty of being in a deep relationship and follows the logical stages from beginning to end. When reading the poem the reader endures a slight feeling of psychosis being ejected from Browning. It feels as if Browning genuinely does not like being in love yet has no conscience means of avoiding such a personal tragedy from occurring. This is highlighted in a few lines at the end of his poem where the meaning is that when he dies a new baby shall spring up just to do exactly what he did his entire life: “No sooner the old hope goes to ground Than a new one, straight to the self-same mark” Browning says that “the chase takes up one’s life”. So what he is trying to say in this statement is that we, the human race, spend our entire lives looking for someone to love, successful or not, then we die and the next generation just do the same without learning, or evolving. To be analytical of this theory would be to say that our species has evolved all that it can and that all that is left is useless and pitiful in our race.
