Lennie Small "Of Mice and Men"
...s extremely dependant upon George for survival. Just like a child, Lennie has a simple dream, to own a farm with George, and tend the rabbits. He has a great affection of petting soft things, let them be animal fur, a cotton dress, or someone's hair. Everyone knew Lennie had a tendency to act like a child, even Slim had mentioned it, " ‘ He's jes' like a kid.' "(43) The only thing Lennie really wants, is to be able to tend the rabbits that he and George planned to get, when they have their own land. Lennie always has George looking out for him, and making sure that he doesn't get into any trouble. He wants to have a certain responsibility that he can attain and be loved for. By tending the rabbits, or raising the pups, Lennie will be able to achieve his responsibilities and receive unconditional affection in return. He feels that this affection can only be given to him by the rabbits or pups that he takes care of. All the work that Lennie does is all to tend the rabbits, he tries extremely hard to stay away from trouble just to make this dream come true. Whenever he feels he does something wrong, he asks, " ‘ I can still tend the rabbits, George?' "(65) Lennie asks each time so that he can reassure himself and keep dreaming about the rabbits he will one day tend. Lennie has a very defenseless characteristic. He is unable to avoid trouble when it comes near to him. Although Lennie has been told to stay away, danger always comes to him, since he is an easy target. Lennie is warned to stay away from both Curley, and his wife, since George knows they will both find Lennie as a weakness. Nobody except George is familiar with Lennie's greatest weakness, that Curley and his wife, both encounter after they strike him. Lennie's weakness is the fact that he does not know his own strength. Because of this drawback, he ends up killing animals, while petting them by accidently applying to much pressure to them. He also breaks unintentionally breaks Curley's hand, after Curley attacks Lennie...
