language

... types of examples language is left up to ones interpretation. The examples I gave, show reasons why the English language is considered difficult to learn. There is so many different rules and exceptions to the rules, how can one fully understand the English language? Just when you believe you know the language, it creeps up on you and throws you curve balls. Have you ever thought how the use of language affects the way we think? I was once told that how can we think about something we don’t use language to convey. Is this true, could someone think about something they cant convey in language? Words express our ideas, and without some type of communication through language we wont be able to think about something. If our language was unable to bring words for our emotions we wouldn’t be able to express the way we feel. There is one tribe that was found years ago that was oblivious to the modern times. This tribe had a language which the word “murder” was not used, this tribe experienced no murder over many centuries and had no clue what it was. This case shows you how much language plays a part on the way individuals and groups think. Also this case backs up the theory that language has a direct relationship with thought. The more words we know , the more thought a person possesses; is this true ? I don’t think we will ever know if this is true because words can’t be measured in relationship to a constant. In George Carlin’s “Doin’ It Again”, he talks about how similar phrases can sound different if said in different ways. The whole idea behind language puts it basis on the context in which it is placed in. This is true because depending on where the commas or rests are placed a phrase can sound nice or bad. Also the pitch of your voice can display different meanings of language. The most common use of pitch change is when one uses sarcasm. Take the phrase “nice hair,” if said in a certain way you may sound like you are trying to tell that person their hair is bad. On the other hand if said in a polite way a person will take it as a compliment. If a times we can’t take people seriously then, then when do we know if someone is joking or being serious? I guess we will never know and it will always be up to our own interpretation. If we think about it we make up our own language. Look over the years and see all the different words that have been invented. More recently you can take a look at internet language to see how ideas and emotions are conveyed. We tend to change the ways words are spelled and use a sort of internet slang. Take the common phrase “how are you doing”; this could be written in a few different ways on the computer: “how r u doin or how ya doin.” ...
