Langston Hughes bio

His grandmother was the one who gave Hughes his love of stories by telling him stories of her first husband Sheridan Leary, a freedman who went to Harper's Ferry in 1859 to fight alongside the abolitionist John Brown. Hughes grew up in the Midwest, which gave him the experience of the blues and spirituals. He would eventually use these musical elements into his own poetry and fiction. Hughes attended Central High School in Cleveland, Ohio, at school he was designated "class poet" and during high school is when he published his first short stories. Since Hughes was growing up during the 1900's he faced many racial troubles. Hughes was able to make friends with some of his white classmates but he still suffered racial insults from the other whites at his school. Hughes had many odd jobs thought his life such as an assistant cook, launderer, and a bus boy just to name a few.
