Hughes’ Madam and the Phone Bill shows the theme by a woman standing up to her phone company. Langston Hughes’ Life is Fine depicts the theme never give up by a person’s for of dying. The character in the poem went down to the river and jumped in. “I came up once and hollered!/ I came up twice and cried!/ If that water hadn’t been so cold/ I might’ve sunk and died” (poets.org). This shows never giving up because be could have just gave up on life and drowned in the river, but he decided to keep going until he got out. “Though you may here me holler,/ and you might see me cry--/ I’ll be dogged, sweet baby,/ If you gonna see me die” (poets.org). This is related to never giving up because he is saying that even though bad things happen to him and he may show pain, he is never going to quit on life. Hughes’ Life is Fine depicts never giving up by a man’s refusal to die. Langston Hughes’ Dreams exhibits never give up by telling people to hold on to their dreams. “Hold fast to dreams/ For if dreams die/ Life is a broken-winged bird/ that cannot fly” (poets.org). This says that you should not let your dreams fade away because if they do, then you can’t do anything wit your life. “Hold fast to your dreams/ For when dreams go,/ Life is a barren field/ Frozen with snow!” (poets.org). This means that if you give up on your dreams you are just sitting there waiting to die. Hughes’ Dreams exhibits never giving up by letting people know that they should never give up on their dreams.
