...a rich life. Mother Teresa chose to live among the poor. Just because you are poor does not mean that given the opportunity that you do not have the same amount of potential as the next person. Giving money to big business is no way to help the economy. The tried trickle down economy has proven a disaster, making the world’s largest economy (the U.S.) into the worlds most in debt. The whole idea of capitalism, or so we are told, is competition. Providing business with money would discourage competition, would it not? There is no motivation in providing money to big business. The poor are in far more need of support and more business. Currently, the market is diluted with more businesses than the capitalist society can handle, creating more complexity to a system which clearly favours the rich over the poor. Abolish labour unions? Then abolish the week-end! Abolish equal rights for all workers! Abolish the rights for women to receive the same amount as men! Abolish children’s rights to not work 60 hours a week in a sweatshop instead of receiving the proper education so you can learn to write letters to the editor. How do workers not work for their pay? Today, people work longer hours for, respecting inflation, less pay. If anything, employers do not pay their workers what they deserve. The workers, that would include all of us – our parents, our friends etc.- DO work for they pay – they are just not paid adequately for it. When you kill the policy “all people created equal”, you kill the true spirit of democracy. Democracy is the right to be yourself, to be allowed to say what you believe (write a letter to the editor), and the fundamental right to have all of your human rights and freedoms respected. When you kill equality, you subsequently kill democracy. When you kill democracy, you kill the spirit of our nation. Canada is built on the idea that all people are equal, not every man for himself. We would really like to see some sincere proof that all people are not created equal. The last serious attempts at this were at the hands of the scientists and doctors of the Nazi regime. The reasons we have laws against discrimination is because it is unfair. When you discriminate, you lose the potential of many great employees simply because of your ignorance and bias. Canada is truly unique in the fact that we are multi-cultural – we are who we are first, Canadian second. Providing for the people comes before providing for the rich. Forget minimum wage? The reason we have minimum wage is because it’s the number that reflects how much money you can make and still live above extreme poverty. Below the minimum wage, you cannot afford proper housing, food, and education – all things guaranteed to us as humans and Canadian citizens. To ...
