Labor Union Good or Bad

(union benefits pg.7) Everywhere in which unions are active, every worker and employer is some how affected by the rules and regulations of labor unions. In all these places some type of negotiating takes place. Even the nonunion members benefit sometimes. Union members try to get as many people as possible to join to join them. Not everyone want to take part in unions though. Labor unions are on a decline right now. In 1997 only 14% of workers belonged to a union. (Galenson pg. 13) This was a major decrease from the end of World War II , when 35% of workers belonged to unions. ( Gross pg.23) The decline of manufacturing is part of the reason membership dropped. The need for workers also declined because of technology, so there wasn’t a lot of people left to join. Labor unions are trying to increase their membership, by having a more tolerant attitude towards nonunion members and employers. Campaigns are even taking place for new members to join. Union members have even been trying to reduce the number of strikes. Some nonunion members don’t want to join because they think unions are only negative, so the union is trying to show them there is some good.
