...his is the first indecation of Jaime’s religious beliefs and values which placed him in the position of being an untrustworthy accessory, being described as ‘a mawkish youth, the smell of his mother’s piety still hanging around him’, should they decided to murder the child. In his overwhelming feelings of pity and compassion for the beast he weeps for it’s lost identity as he knew ‘that the child could become no more than a wolf – worse – less than a wolf, for at least a wolf is natural’. The strength of his bond deepens as his anxiety for the wellbeing of the beast grows. The lengthy persistant persuing of her whereabouts in a fruitless, failing attempt to protect her disturbs him greatly. His recongnition of the futility of his attempts at saving her leads him to the cathedral as he was fearful she would die unbaptized and therefore be denied a basic human right . He seems to be drawfted by the church, this being symbolic of how, not so much in his life, but how the islands citizens are dominated by religion. The church was intrigued by the situation and co-operated with the baptism. Jaimes intense commitment had withstood a barrage of animal instinctive behaviour yet throughout all the attacks on him his devotion stood strong as he saw he for what she was, a human. Severo likens Jaime to Beneditx as they ‘both see with the eye of faith.One saw innate knowledge of God, and the other saw a human soul in a creature degraded to the likeness of a wolf.’, even those around Jaime sees his ‘tender conscience’. Although he was commanded to leave her, and to ‘think of her no more’ he found it exceedingly difficult. The authorical comment made but Walsh about Amara and Josefas relationship ironically relates, and clearly depicts, Jaimes loyalty and bond with Amara: ‘A strange emotion flows between the helpless and the helper.
