The store’s hours of operation are 24 hours a day, including several hours on holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving. The store opened in North Charleston in 1994, and it employs close to 200 people. The day crew is full of part-time teen workers and some full time managers and older cashiers. The night shift full-time workers are mostly adults over 25 and small amounts of workers under eighteen who work part-time. Super Kmart has a diverse product line. They have many departments within the store full of popular brands and private labels. Martha Stewart, Sesame Street, Jaclyn Smith, Kathy Ireland, Pensake Automotive, American Fare, Route 66, KGro, BenchTop and WhiteWestinghouse are some of the brands that bring quality, style and selection to the Kmart store and those who live and shop in North Charleston Super Kmart. B. Description of the Community The people surrounding the Super Kmart store in the Charleston-North Charleston market, is the cause of its great success. The total population of this area is 70,218. This does not include the patrons of the store that travel from other counties such as the Berkeley county area. The number of people employed in this area over the age of 16 is 32,675. The Quality of Life Index of this area is above the US average. This means that the population is full of those who are willing and able consumers, therefore, giving Super Kmart opportunity for prosperity within its community. The median age for the area of North Charleston is 22.8 or 23 years old. This shows Super Kmart that there is a market of youthful customers looking for new brands to build loyalties toward and older consumers that know what they want and can look to Super Kmart to supply those products and brands at a reasonable price.
