... is now the location of the visitors center. I was shocked how nice the house actually was, considering it is in the middle on no where. The barn was the location of where the tabby was made. Tabby is a mixture of oyster shell and other substances such as lime stone mixed together to make a concrete type substance. The barn was actually made out of the tabby mixture. Today it is empty and all that is left in it is a giant metal pot looking thing. There is really nothing fancy about the barn, but it is a very sound structure, considering it has stood for many years. The garden is a very small plot of land that you see right when you walk into the Kingsley plantation. It has a small variety of plants including sea island cotton. The entire grounds used to be filled with sea island cotton. It is a very soft cotton that almost resembles a silk substance. This was the crop of choice for the Kingsley plantation. The slave quarters were some of the most interesting buildings on the property. They are very small buildings that are located along the road that you enter on. They are very small buildings that are made out of tabby. They were the furthest structures from the Planter’s residence. There are twenty-three slave quarters in all. This is obviously were the men, women, and children lived while working on the Kingsley plantation. These men and women followed a task system. The task system was that they had chores to do for the day. When these chores were completed they could do what they wanted to. They had time to tend to their own crops, go fishing ect.
