Sue tells Mark that she is going to the police and he goes over to her house at night while her parents are out and ties her up and sets her house on fire. Mark Kinney is the mastermind of the plan. He is cold, manipulative, and very persuasive. He convinces the others, David Ruggles, Jeff Garrett, Sue McConnell and Betsy Cline to go along with his plan. David Ruggles is the Senior Class President. He is good looking and popular. He knows the plan is crazy but goes along with it to be part of the group. Jeff Garrett is an all star varsity basketball player and is easily led by Mark. Mark uses Jeff because Jeff has a giving nature. Jeff always does what Mark says. Betsy Cline is head cheerleader and secretly has a crush on Mark and she thinks he will like her if she goes along with his idea. Sue McConnell is a straight A student, awkward, plain, unpopular and mousy. She only went along with the idea because she was hoping to fit in with the popular group. The conflict takes place between Mark and Sue. Sue's conscience is troubling her and she tries to convince the group to go to the police and tell what has happened. The police have questioned Sue already as she was the last person to see Mr. Griffin alive ( she had scheduled an after school conference with Mr. Griffin as part of the plot), but Mark makes up a story for Sue to tell the police.
