Although Marry Ann appeared to be this helpless often abused wife that was looking for security and love, if the story had been written without a tunnel view perspective it would have revealed Richard Strout as a man that needed to be taught how to love. The story portrayed Richard as a bully from a well to do family and does not say much more beyond that. The plot of the story helped enhance Dubus technique of tunnel viewing perspective. Instead of him presenting the story in a chronological order events, he starts the story at the end which causes the audience to look beyond all the facts and focus on the death of Matt Fowler’s son F...
