It was honourable to die in a suicide “special attack forces of the wind of the gods.” Suicide missions were accepted without question by the Japanese soldiers, they had each taken an oath pledging their life & unyielding allegiance to their Emperor and their country. It was steadfastly believed by the Japanese soldiers, that because they were fighting for their Emperor God, the kamikaze would ultimately save them, just as it did when the Mongols attacked in the 13th Century. The emperor Hirohito was hailed as a god. It was 1945 & the Japanese were all but defeated in the war. The USA controlled the airways over the Pacific Ocean and as a last effort to salvage their dignity; the Japanese commenced kamikaze; named kamikaze after the great wind that saved Japan. The emperor asked for Japanese men to volunteer for these one-way suicide missions. There were countless volunteers & waiting lists of pilots ready to die.
