...idn’t have anything to eat and would go to sleep hungry. When Kalina would get down about her life, she would take long walks in the forest and listen to the birds chirping and look at the pretty flowers. One day, there was nothing to eat at Kalina’s and Monique’s house and Monique and her mother were yelling at each other. Kalina ran off in tears to the forest. She sat down on a rock, covered her face with her hands, and sobbed. Then all of a sudden, a fairy appeared in front of Kalina and tapped her on the shoulder with her magic wand. Kalina gasped and didn’t believe her eyes! Was this for real? “I am not in your imagination,” replied the fairy as if she could read Kalina’s mind and Kalina gasped again. “I hope this will help you out.” The fairy waved her wand and the tiny pebbles below Kalina’s feet turned into diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. Kalina cried tears of joy and looked at the fairy in amazement. “All this is for you, child,” the fairy said and with that she disappeared. Kalina stared at the jewels for a moment in complete astonishment. She then gathered the jewels up in her skirt and ran home. Kalina’s mother also cried when Kalina returned home with the jewels. Naturally, Monique was extremely jealous as Kalina had basically saved the family from starving. She asked Kalina where she found these jewels and Kalina told her the entire story. The next day, Monique went into the woods, sat on the same rock, and pretended to cry. As Monique hoped, the fairy appeared and tapped Monique on the shoulder. When Monique raised her head, the fairy realized that this person was not the same good-natured one as yesterday.
