...ey have connotations with food that is “inexpensive,” “unhealthy”, “robotic” and “greasy”. Both the definitions mentioned above imply that junk food (and also fast food) consists of a great variety of products such as chips, pizzas, ice cream and soft drinks. In general they are seen as products that need little preparation, so that varies from milky way bars to hamburgers. The facts that it needs little preparation and that it can be bought everywhere contributes to the popularity of junk food. It is mostly popular among students and (little) children. Students find it attractive because it is so cheap, easy to make and it takes little time to prepare it: like pizza, hamburgers and French fries, and in the busy lives of students this is all very convenient. Children just love it because of their lack of knowledge of what is healthy and what is not and it just taste so good! Also the little presents, which come along with the food, are very attractive to the children, like the little presents in a happy meal of McDonalds or those in the little chocolate eggs called Kinder Surprise. It is not always necessary to make your own junk food, you can also just go to one of the many fast food restaurants. They first appeared in the sixties, when the economy was growing, and people got busier lives and less time to eat. The fast food restaurants are currently on the increase all over the world. Most of these places work in a similar way. There is a long counter above which is displayed a list-often with pictures- of the items available and behind it several people- often students working for the minimum wage-are serving. You receive what you order more or less immediately and take it on a tray to a table picking up things like straws, pepper, salt and napkins (usually paper napkins) on the way. If you can’t see any knives and forks it means you are supposed to eat with your hands, which is also one of the characteristics of junk food. Until now I have only written about the practical side of junk food, but how does it affect our health? Of course junk food tastes good, but because of the limited nutritional value it can’t be good for our health.
