Juillard School of Music Essay for Application

...feel. I dream to share the stories and feelings that go through my mind when I play or listen to music. When I think of the word ‘goal’ I think of winning. I wouldn’t call becoming a musician my goal, because I would not be winning anything except happiness. I don’t think you necessarily win happiness, I think you achieve it. My dream started around ninth grade. All my life I wanted to be a lawyer like my father because I knew it would make him happy. Then I started thinking about what made me happy. When I found myself practicing the drums and percussion and mallets in my basement, even when I wasn’t asked to by my teacher, I knew there must be something special about me and music. I always put my time into music, I never realized until then that it was really what made me happy. I’ve spent a long time just figuring out how to become this person. How do you get people to listen to you? And how do you express yourself better and create sounds that are beautiful and moving? I was lucky enough to have two great teachers. Jude was the expressive side of music. Mr. Paysen was the technical side. I got an equal amount of what I needed to start my life of becoming a musician. Jude always believed in me and in my dream. She helped me and told me that I could show the world one day how hard I worked and how happy music made me. The reason I am still following my dream today is because someone believed in me. I needed some idea that I could do it. Sometimes everyone needs a little push in the right direction. I wouldn’t say that I ‘chose’ music.
