Unfortunately Jurgis sprains his ankle at work because of the poor working conditions and is forced to stay home for three months without getting any paid. At the same time, Jurgis’s wife’s stepmother’s son dies of food poisoning and her brother, Jonah, abandons the family. After getting better Jurgis tries to get his old job, but is refused. He tries hard to find another job and finally ends up working at a fertilizer plant. Because of the great pressures upon him, he starts drinking alcohol in order to forget his problems. One night Jurgis attacks his wife’s boss because he forced her to sleep with him. He is sent to jail for a month. After he is released from the jail, he finds out that his family has been evicted and is living in a boarding home. Just as he returns home he witnesses his wife in premature labor. Unfortunately his wife and their unborn second child die and Jurgis disappears on a drunken bender. Finally after a few months, he starts working again (at a steel mill) and starts to feel hope, but suddenly his first son who was the only remembrance of his family dies. Jurgis abandons his remaining family and lives as a hobo. The next winter Jurgis returns to the Chicago and finds a job digging tunnels. But he ends up being a beggar because of the injuries that he got during working on the tunnels and losses his job. A rich man gives Jurgis a hundred dollar bill and Jurgis attacks a bartender after he shortchanges him, and is sent to jail again. After being released he becomes criminal to support himself and finds a job with the local political boss. He makes a lot of money as a scab during some strikes. But Jurgis attacks his dead wife’s boss again and is sent to jail again. After being released Jurgis is forced to live on charity. Jurgis searches for his family and finds out that his wife’s cousin, one of the people who wanted them to move to America for a better life, is addicted to mo...
