Jonathon Swift's Satire of England

Many of the people that Gulliver meets in his travels represent politicians of the day. Flimnap, the lord treasurer of Lilliput, is viewed as Sir Robert Walpole, the chief minister of England. Skyresh Bologram, Gulliver's mortal enemy at Lilliput, is the earl of Notingham and George I is represented by the oppressive king of Laputa. The policies and corruptions of England are satirized throughout the entire book. Gulliver comes across the kingdom of Tribnia where the "Bulk of people consisted wholly of Dissenters, Witnesses, Informers, Accusers, Prosecutors, Evidences, Swearers." Swift used this to exploit the unconventional methods that were used to convict Bishop Atterbury, one of Swift's oldest friends of treason, in 1722.
