...659, Locke was elected to a senior studentship, which is like a fellowship, at Christ Church in Oxford. He was able to continue his studies more freely during this time. In 1666 Locke happened to have practiced medicine on Anthony Copper (also known as Lord Ashley), and the two became very good friends. When Lord Ashley became 1st Earl of Shaftesbury and appointed Lord Chancellor, he was able to help John acquire several government appointments. However, throughout the following years Lord Ashley was not able to keep a steady position in government himself, and this forced Locke to relocate multiple times. During his periods of exile Locke wrote many different works, and they were finally published on a significant scale in 1689.
