... road. The man is an unemployed haytrusser. They see a fair, and a furmity tent in a village. They enter the tent and the man drinks rum and gets drunk. After a while he gets drunk and offers to sell his wife and child by auction. A sailor enters the tent and bids five guineas. They are sold and walk away. The drunken man, Michael Henchard, awakes after having slept off the alcohol in the tent. He tries to find his Wife and child but is told they have immigrated. He enters the church and swears he will not touch alcohol in twenty-one years. Many years later the woman Susan Henchard, now Newson and Elizabeth-Jane come walking down the same road. They are searching for Michael Henchard. They learn he’s gone to Casterbridge, a nearby city. Susan and Elizabeth-Jane lived in Canada with Newson. Newson however is reported lost at sea. Susan wants to get a better life for E.J. so she comes back to search for Michael Henchard. They find him in Casterbridge. Susan writes a note and sends E.J. with it to Micheal, who accepts her. Susan and Michael make a plan to remarry, without anybody knowing what has happened before. Henchard is now a the mayor of Casterbridge. He also has his own business. Farfrae, a handsome young scottishman, starts as a manager for Henchard. He also likes E.J., and vice versa. Susan and Michael remarry, and E.J. becomes Michael’s legal daughter. Somebody sends a note to E.J. and Farfrae to meet in a granary, and they do. Michael wants to punish a worker for oversleeping, by working without trousers. Farfrae tells the worker not to mind Henchard’s order, so Farfrae and Michael clash. Both Henchard and Farfrae organizes a party, and everybody favourizes Farfrae’s. This is another clash. Farfrae is not wanted by Henchard as a manager anymore, so Farfrae starts his own business. Farfrae almost proposes to E.J. Lucetta sends a note to Henchard for her love letter she has written to him. She fails to meet Henchard. Susan writes a note which is not to be opened until E.J. marriage. Susan dies, and tells E.J. that she is his real daughter. E.J. accepts him as her father. Michael finds the letter from Susan, and reads it. It says that E.J. is not his E.J. Now Michael finds it hard to have E.J. in the house, and he doesn’t tell her about the fact. Lucetta, Henchards previous lover comes to Casterbridge. She invites E.J. to come and live with her and E.J. agrees. E.J. notices the attraction between Farfrae and Lucetta. Farfrae comes to visit Lucetta, and they ignore E.J. Henchard also comes to visit Lucetta and proposes marriage to her, but she doesn’t accept. Henchard goes to a weather prophet to get some advice on the weather. He wants to speculate in business. He plans his business after what the weather prophet says, but everything turns out wrong. Henchard loses a lot of money. Henchard forces Lucetta to accept marriage to him, and takes E.J. as a witness. Henchard is standing in a Magistrate. The furmity is the accused. She reveals Henchard’s secret to the court, and Michael doesn’t deny the truth. Everybody comes hears about the truth of Michael, and his business becomes even worse. Lucetta tells Henchard that she has married Farfrae. E.J. shocked, and leaves Lucetta’s house. She finds a new place to live. Henchard has to leave the Mayors office and house. Farfrae becoming the new mayor moves in, getting all the things to Henchard. Michael has to stay in a cheap lodging. Nobody can visit Henchard since he gives strict orders for nobody to come. Henchard meets Farfrae who wants to give him his furnitu...
