...U.S. citizens favor the death penalty. In 1966, less than half of the people in the U.S. approved of the death penalty. A major factor is the increasing fear of violent crime. Many people turn to the death penalty as a possible remedy. Some who support capital punishment do so because they feel the threat of death will prevent people from committing crimes. Others think some crimes are so horrible that the only proper punishment is death. Another consideration is rates of violent crimes have decreased in some countries that no longer have the death penalty, and some of our states that have the death penalty have incurred increasing rates of homicide. Supporters of capital punishment counter with the argument that the death penalty would be more effective as a deterrent were it not for the many appeals, long delays and limited numbers of those actually executed.
