...ed Jesus to judge people and separate good and evil. That is why he questioned Jesus' identity. Jews thought that when the Messiah came, they would enjoy a prosperous period of joy. Some believed the messiah would come in the form of a superman, who had special powers to perform tricks and miracles, and who could protect from pain and suffering Jews also believed that the Messiah would be one of military strength. With the memories of king David plastered in their thoughts, they imagined Jesus to be a great warrior, one to literally fight off the Romans and save them. However, Jesus was not the one to save them from the Romans, Moses came before Jesus, and The Romans to do that, Jesus was last in this eschatological plan.. So how was Jesus the 'chosen one'? How did he save the people? Jesus did do all these things, but hardly how the Jews were expecting! The temptations show how Jesus rejected to become the type of messiah people wanted. Each temptation that Satan puts to Jesus has to do with identity. Some believed that the messiah would rid them of material needs. Each temptation offered an easy way to create a kingdom, but none of them would be the permanent one that God is willing to give and provide for his people.
