Jesus saw the crowd on the mountain, so He began preaching to the people and his disciples. Jesus explained how to be “blessed,” or truly happy. He told them not to put worldly pleasures first but that they must put Christ first. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matt. 6:19). He said it would not be easy, but “rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.’ (Matt. 5:12). Jesus spoke to the tax collectors and sinners. He told his story in parables to make it easier to understand. He explained that the sheep in the story are like us and the one that is lost is the sinner.
