The only remaining part of Hull House was the original mansion, that belonged to Charles Hull and the dining room. These two buildings have been turned into a museum (Deborah 20). In 1906, Addams decided to turn her attention to a political career. She was the first woman to become president of the National Conference of Charities and Corrections (NCCC). Addams’ main focus with the NCCC were on midwifery, narcotics consumption, milk supplies, sanitary conditions, and a official garbage inspector. While Addams was the president of NCCC she received an annual salary of $1,000. In 1910, Yale University awarded Addams an honorary degree. She had became the first woman ever to be awarded a degree from Yale. Jane Addams was a trail blazer for her time. She was an American social worker and an humanitarian. By the time she died she had become the most popular woman in the United States. Some other reforms that Addams brought to America was she creation of civic Miller 4 groups to pressure the legislators to make changes that Addams and her followers wanted to see put into place. Some of her most notable developments were the first eight hour working law for women, the first child labor law, the housing reforms, and the first juvenile court (Kramer 63). In 1905, Addams had decided to get involved with education which was very important to her. She was appointed to Chicago’s Board of Education. She founded and established the Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy. Jane Addams won the Noble Peace Prize in 1931 along with Nicholas Butler for recognition of all of their humanitarian acts. Jane had won worldwide recognition throughout the first third of the 20th century for being a social worker, feminist, and internationalist (Chanan 23). Jane Addams was strongly opposed to imperialism and any military actions because of her social beliefs. When America entered into World War One, she opposed entering the war and made public speeches opposing it. Because of this, the press attacked her and called her a traitor. This was the one bleak moment in her lifetime achievements. She was also kicked out of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
