...he discriminated against him by just telling him he couldn’t do things such as take care of the dog because he was dumb and he would stay home and the dog would like him instead of her. Charlie’s workplace was his most troublesome place of discriminatory comments. His first offender was Mr. Donner, the manager of the bakery. He gave Charlie his job at the bakery, which consisted of cleaning toilets, mopping the floor, etc… doing the dirty work and what not. Charlie’s uncle, Mr. Donner’s friend, assured him that Charlie would have a permanent position at the bakery, but that was not the case. As soon as Charlie had the operation to become more intelligent, Mr. Donner fired Charlie because of some reasons, “‘I know Charlie. Nothing’s wrong with your work. But something happened to you, and I don’t understand what it means. Not only me. Everyone else has been talking about it. I’ve had them in here a dozen times in the last few weeks. They’re all really upset. Charlie, I got to let you go.’” (Keyes, 73). This proved that Mr. Donner fired him for discrimination, which in case in against the law because it is wrong. Because of Charlie’s intelligence, (he went from an I.Q. of 68 to a much high I.Q. because of his operation) he fired him because the employees felt so low compared to him. But there was a point where Mr. Donner did not believe there was anything wrong with Charlie he was just looking out for his business, “ ‘If you did then I’d tell them I don’t care about their allegations and their petitions, and I’d stick up for you against all of them. But as it is now, they’re all real scared to death of you, I got to think of my own family too.’” (Keyes, 73). Mr. Donner loved Charlie, but he could not do much about it because he wanted to keep his reputation in tact. Charlie’s second misdemeanour to him happened with several other co-workers.
