Is the Media Right?
... In my opinion the news media seems to ignore the poor. The rate of poverty is rapidly increasing twice as fast as the population growth in the United States. In addition, with remarkably little attention to them, the poor people and the poverty’s problems are often hidden from most Americans. When the media does decide to shift its attention to the poor it offers a series of contradictory messages and portrayals. When the Census Bureau released a new report the poor become statistics rather than people. It tends to ignore the human tragedy of poverty endured by millions of children and adults. Also, being of practical value to the wealthy, such coverage has considerable ideological value. Its message: the concerns of the wealthy are the concerns of us all. The media tends to fail to notice the way in which the rich as a class of people create and shape domestic and foreign policy. For example: running in an election; if you don’t have the money to have a good campaign and for good publicity, the chances of you winning are slim to none. The wealthy seem to ...
