During the last decade, Rock music lyrics have become increasingly explicit, particularly with reference to drugs, sex, violence and even sexual violence. For example Nine Inch Nails released “Big Man with a gun,” with the following lyrics: I am a big man (yes I am) and I have a big gun, got me a big dick and I like to have fun, held against your forehead, I’ll make you suck it, maybe I’ll put a hole in your head, you know just for the fu–k of it.” Marilyn Manson has quite the way with lyrics. “Who said date rape isn’t kind,” “ The housewife I will beat” and “ I slit my teenage wrist” is just a sample of the kind of music he writes. After the columbine school shootings, some suggested that the two kids who opened fire on their classmates had been influenced by the music they listened to. People were told Klebold and Harris were goths preoccupied with death and that the music they listened to contributed to their killing spree. The question of music censorship has been going on for awhile now, and it seems as if it will continue for years and years. Each person will listen to the music that they see fit for themselves, weather it’s a clean version of it or not. There will generally always be something controversial throughout the lyrics, guitar riffs, and drumbeats on the music scene. One simply needs to know what is more important, the constitutional rights of freedom of speech and due process or preserving morality. Nowadays they put a parental advisory stickers on the music. Music stores are supposed to check identification if the music has that sticker on it. So if parents feel the music is unfit for there kids to listen to then they now have some control over it. That doesn’t mean that kids will stop listening to the music there interested in. Where there is a will there is always a way. Just remember that next time you say no.
