Instinct movie review

...ive in the wild with mountain gorillas for nearly two years. Theo Caulder (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a psychologist, tries to solve the mystery of Dr. Powell, which turns out to be no mystery at all. The movie integrates the brutal reality of prison life with memories of what happens in Africa to motivate Hopkins' violent behavior. The most surprising and dramatic scene of the entire film occurs when Dr. Powell nearly strangles Caulder to death. The scene shows how the dominance of uncivilized man prevails. Caulder, who is simply eager to understand the mysterious truth behind the scientist's actions, escapes only because he begins to understand Powell’s question, “What am I taking from you?” Powell says he is taking away illusions from Caulder, which shows the way society consistently misinterprets reality. For example, society believes Powell violently killed the Rwandan rangers when, in fact, he killed them out of self-defense and for the safety of the gorillas. Rousseau says the artificiality dictates people’s lives. Instinct proves this theory to be true. In the film, civil society creates a façade where things are perceived differently from what they actually are. This is apparent when the psychologists immediately conclude that Dr. Powell is crazy because he does not speak and lives with gorillas.
