Insomnia

When the situation is resolved the problem usually goes away without medical treatment. Long term, or chronic, insomnia usually lasts two to three weeks and increase the amount of injuries by a decreased concentration. Chronic insomnia can lead to mood disorders such as depression. How is stress related to insomnia? Let’s first take a look at ourselves and our environment. If we were to walk down the street today we would see a world of stress. More than likely you make difficult decisions everyday, and are often under the pressures of meeting deadlines with work, completing homework, and trying to stay competitive with sports. Yet we experience the same levels of stress and success. When this becomes unbalance people have trouble dealing with their problems and can cause mood disorders such as insomnia. Treatments for insomniacs vary greatly depending on the cause for the insomnia in that person. It would include alleviating any physical and emotional problems causing this condition. Exploring changes in lifestyle to improve the situation would also help in reducing insomnia. Making changes in their behavior is a form of treatment used. Some changes they could make is to go to bed only when they feel tired, using they bedroom only for sleep, doing something relaxing when they can’t go to sleep in another room, getting up at the same every morning, and avoiding naps during the daytime. One method is relaxing to sounds of nature and relaxing music before going to sleep. Auto-genetic training is a method by imaging that you are falling asleep, and self-hypnosis by concentrating on heaviness and warmth in the limbs inducing sleep. Getting a little exercise 3-5 times a week, and working up a light sweat is said to help treat insomnia. Something’s as little as changing to a comfortable bedroom temperature, reducing the noise level, eliminating light, avoiding smoking because of the stimuli found in nicotine, avoiding drinks with caffeine, and avoiding alcohol.
