Your computer needs a faster way to load windows and programs. RAM (Random Accessed Memory) which is located on your motherboard takes care of that job. RAM basically has the ability to run programs faster then the hard drive. Also for example when you are typing something the words you type are saved on RAM. If you don’t save that document into your hard drive and you shut down the computer. You'll eventually lose them because RAM only saves information while the computer is running. Every time you turn off your computer the RAM on your pc automatically refreshes itself and then when you turn the computer back on, you start out with zero data on RAM and those data increase when you open new programs. There are a large number of components and devices inside a pc, but only one is big enough, complicated enough, and important enough to be called the “the big Kahuna (motherboard).”(kraynak 16) The motherboard holds a very important chip which acts as the brain of the computer, that chip is called the CPU (Central Processing Unit) chip. It also holds your computers RAM. Also the motherboard holds all the slots, such as the bit-slots and PCI slots, the ports such as the keyboard and mouse ports, and the chips such as the BIOS chips. The motherboard also acts like the meeting place for all the cables and plugs from all the components and devices. The brain of the computer! How could a computer have a brain…? Well it sounds impossible but yes “The CPU (Central Processing Unit) acts as the brain of the computer while it’s turned on.” (Gralia 14) Without the CPU the computer wouldn’t even work. The CPU’s job is to manage the flow of information, tasks, programs, and a lot more correctly in order for the computer to function the right way. Computer CPUs come in different speeds. CPU speeds are measured in megahertz (MHZ), such as 350 MHZ. Sometimes, the CPU speed is just mentioned after the processor name, like Pentium III 900. The faster the CPU speed, the faster your computer functions. Because all the various devices and components in your computer produce lots of heat, your computer can actually shut down, lock up, or return errors if it gets too hot. If over heating happens a lot with your PC its obviously will reduce the life of your parts, especially the CPU. How does your computer keep its components and devices cool? The answer in fact is just… a fan! Under the power supply there is a fan that continually generates cool air through the inside of the case, and so over heating doesn’t occur to any devices or components. Have you ever though of what displays the text and graphics on the monitor? Well obviously it’s not the monitor so what is it? YYYYYYYOU got it it’s the video card. The video card is “A card that plugs into your motherboard and enables your computer to display text and graphics on your monitor.” (Chambers 341) All video cards have their own RAM, and the more RAM they have the more colors and more better the graphics are. Also the video card helps speed up your computer, and the good thing about video cards is that it does all the work itself, giving the CPU a break. Have you wondered how a floppy drive and floppy disks work? “A floppy drive stores and retrieves information on floppy disks”(Maran, 9)The floppy disk is the slowest type of disk, and acts similar to a CD (compact Disk) and what it does is that it saves up to 1.44 megabytes of data which is about 500 pages typed. “Floppy disks are infamous for simply losing data through exposure to magnetic fields, heat, and a simple old age.”(White 118) The floppy drive has a basic job which is to read the data and transfer them from the disk when inserted in the floppy drive at any computer.
