In comparing the Church to avarice, Dante had degraded them like no one had ever done before. Dante believed strongly in the “golden mean”, or moderation. He thought that people should be in the middle, neither a hoarder nor a waster. Therefore it is fitting that the sinners in Canto VII are going to punish each other for eternity.
