Indus Valley
...The houses of the Indus valley region were built of burnt bricks and were on both sides of wide, paved streets. The streets ran in a grid, running parallel and perpendicular to each other. Ceramic drainpipes and covered sewers made up an extensive drainage system, which was incredible for the day and age that it existed in. Some of the houses were large, where as others were small. But most houses were of a common standard size with two stories. The economy of the Indus Valley region was based upon agriculture, as were many other civilizations of that time. They had many inventions to make agriculture easier, as well. One of which was the wooden plough. Their largest achievement was most likely the cultivation of cotton, which is still important to us today. Their main crops were barley and wheat. They ate vegetables and fruits, cereals, beef and pork, and also fish. There is even some evidence, which shows that they had domestic animals that lived with them as pets. Some were just the average cat and dog but also there were signs of goats, sheep, and even possibly elephants. Bronze and Copper played a large role in their communities. The people were skilled in pottery and stone sculptures. Charms and amulets where produced to keep evil spirits away. Also they had mining and were capable of constructing buildings that were even higher than two stories and very well planned. Cement was even used to join metals and stones together. The people of the Indus Valley region had reasons for what they did. In other civilizations, the people the constructed lavish temples, palaces and Tombs; extensive amounts of money were put into these structures. As for the townspeople in other civilizations, they lived in mud houses that were far from fancy and expensive. In the Indus Valley they built fine structures for the convenience of the citizens. The attention to the structures and functions caused this region to run smoothly, because it was built for the convenience the people that lived there. It can be inferred that the people of the Indus Valley possessed a high level of intelligence due to their trade with foreign regions. The Indian Sea is very strong, but they were able to construct boats sturdy enough to survive its powerful waters.
