..., if I was with close personal friends I tend to be more spontaneous and lackadaisical. A reason why there are such big differences in my personality, may be a result of the comfort level I'm feeling with certain people. If I don't know a person well, then I will tend to be more silent and inhibitive. Whereas if it was a close friend I can be more at ease and not keep up a front. And how much of yourself you want to reveal. Also it may not be too appropriate to act in certain ways while at work. Implemented rules and restrictions such as sexual harassment and certain behavior that is not tolerated will affects ones personality. I believe it's both a conscious act and an adaptation for the differences of behavior you exhibit. On one hand you act the way you act because of the environment and surroundings you're in. In which you consciously conform your behavior to suit your environment. On the other hand you start to "adapt' to the nature of the environment your in. For example, in the workplace, it becomes a routine. Sooner or later the work persona becomes part of your personality. The reference organization I'm using is that of my current workplace. I am currently working for CUNY Office of Admission Services as an assistant. Now considering the position I have, I must conduct myself in an orderly manner. I consciously go in expecting not to use foul language nor flirt with any of my female co-workers. Behavior I usually exhibit when surrounded by groups of friends. Thus changing my personality. Now personality is defined in the text as "the sum total ways in which an individual reacts and interacts with others". Then again this is behavior you learn to adapt to. In a way it becomes a new you. The concept of Self-monitoring pretty much sums up the point I'm trying to make. Self - Monitoring defined to be " a personality trait that measures an individuals ability to adjust his or her behavior to external, situational factors. I think that I am high in self-monitoring. Showing high contradictions in my personality from my public persona to my private life. Aside from the self-monitoring theory, emotions and moods come into play on providing some insight to my behavior at work. The text defines EMOTIONS as “intense feelings that are directed at someone or something” and MOODS as “feelings that tend to be less intense than emotions and that lack a contextual stimulus”.
