Importance of The Color Purple

Celie says that she wants a dress “that Shug Avery would wear.” (22) She says that Shug Avery is like a queen so Celie wanted a red or purple dress, which are regal colors. This is the sign of Celie’s association of purple and red with being higher, like royalty. Unfortunately, Celie is disappointed when she learns she has to choose between murky colors- brown, maroon, and dark blue. Color is a symbol of Celie’s growth in the story. When she goes to purchase the dress, although she wants a purple dress, she is unable to attain it. Perhaps this is meant to symbolize that Celie is still “not ready” to wear the color purple. She has still not begun to struggle to have a stronger independence and sense of self. At this point in the story, Celie still willingly submits to Mr. _____ because she is unable to see any reason worth fighting for. This is of course her error in thought.
