In the beginning of the story Dimmesdale is among the many punishing Hester Prynne. He is also trying tp get the name of the child’s father out of her. Later on it is discovered that Dimmesdale is the father. He is a hypocrite for this reason, he was punishing and looking down upon Hester Prynne for the same sin he commited. Hester Prynne is looked down upon by society for her adulterous sin. She claims to have learned her lesson and shall never again sin. Later in the story Hester tells Dimmesdale, “thou shalt not go alone.” Since she is so willing it is obvious that she has not actually learned from her lesson.
