Sentence structure of commands, directions and orders imply “you” as the subject because “you” are being told to do something; and usually commands end with a period. Almost equally used as commands, directions and orders are questions. Questions make up 3% to15% of our total daily verbal experience. Often friends, co-workers or family ask a person a question in a classroom or at work. There are two kinds of questions, rhetorical questions and legitimate questions. Legitimate questions are asked to find out information you wish to receive. Rhetorical questions are questions that imply their own answer. An example of this would be “Why would she want to put her hand on a hot stove?” Questions are often short, containing 3 to 5 words. Statements are the most used form of human utterance. We use statements 75% to 90% of our daily experience. Statements are used in books and magazines, and the television news uses statements with which to inform the public.
