...ow. Shifting genes before birth alters a child's characteristics. These characteristics make one person different from the other. I am not saying that everyone will have the same identity, but a lot of people will have the same characteristics. Also if a boy had genes that were altered as an embryo, but at the age of 21 his parents explained to him, "We did not want to have a girl, so we changed your genes making sure that you would be a boy." I am sure that when the boy finds that out, he is not going to be happy with his parents deciding his future for him. It is almost as if the parents that change their child's characteristics are altering their life, by making these decisions without having the children know. Similarly, if I had a choice to correct an unborn child's disease or deformities with genetic engineering, I would have to refuse that offer. If I happened to find out that my child was going to be mentally retarded and was aware of genetic engineering, I still would not allow genetic engineering to occur. I realize I would have to give my child special attention incase of disabilities and dedicate my entire life to taking care of him/her. I am strongly against genetic engineering because that is basically saying; "I do not want to take care of my child because he is abnormal or mentally retarded, so I will just change his/her genetic background." These parents that would alter their children's genes do not love them for who they are. I want to stress that, these parents that are willing to change their children just so they do not have disabilities or diseases, are not showing their true love and affection for their child. I feel the parents are thinking about themselves more than their child because they realize t...
