Or at least danger, a feeling that seems to be avoided at every turn in our "safety first" society. Golding belief is that people prefer to be savage, with nothing but force-fed beliefs and restrictive peers to hold us back. About the ethical nature of the individual, I belief that is shown quite blatintly with the division of tribes. The young-uns represent the masses, sheep that follow the most popular ideals of the time. This portrays the massive change in beliefs throughout history, from savagry to eventual pacifism. People change together, with the odd individual thinking before or behind his time. Jack was slightly behind, and Roger was freakin' prehistoric.
